Perkins V has mandated that colleges receiving Perkins funds develop and implement deliberate outreach programs to recruit students from “Special Populations” including students who are pursing gender nontraditional CTE fields of study as well as student who are homeless, single mothers, English learners, veterans, children of veterans, those who have limited access to financial resources and those who face a disability etc. This session discusses innovative strategies and best practices to increase effectiveness of the institutional outreach efforts to “Special Populations”. The session showcases successful models utilized across the country for effective outreach, engagement and mobilization of members of this population.

Case Management Tools and Best Practices FOR recruitment and retention of gender nontraditional students

This case management workshop will focus on a variety of case management tools. We will discuss application of innovative strategies of case management that exist in other fields to CTE programs and gender-nontraditional students.  The webinar will also showcase models of case management that have been proven successful in the field and will feature interviews with case managers who will provide on the ground testimonials of case  management.

Targeted Communication: Effective Strategies for Sustained Engagement with Millennials

Millennials constitute the largest (35%) generation in the current u.s workforce (PEW Research, 2018).  Recent research studies show that effective modes of communication, expectations from workplace, nature of returns on higher education differ from generation to generation.
Understanding priorities and dominant worldviews of this generation, what they consider important to them and what they value in their professional and personal lives and the pressures and challenges they face  will go a long way in devising strategies to engage them as potential gender nontraditional career & technical education (CTE) students. This webinar focuses on recruitment and retention of millennials and discuss best strategies to maintain sustained engagement with this generation. It will provide a synthesis of the research and practice literature on best practices and proven strategies.

Thriving in a Gender-Nontraditional Career & technology education (cte) Program

A panel of leaders and role models from various fields that are gender-nontraditional will discuss how they overcome various challenges as nontraditional students, and will offer words of advice to the current and potential nontraditional students. The panel will be followed by a questions and answers session from nontraditional students from the field. The purpose of this webinar is to discuss the pressing issues that gender-nontraditional students at CTE programs are facing;  and create an environment where they can discuss issues following a panel.

It provides an approach of thinking critically and analytically about bias that may already be embedded in course curricula and the pedagogical tools teachers use to deliver instructions. It also covers the building blocks of cultural competency as it applies to tailoring instructions to students who are pursing CTE programs that are nontraditional for their gender.
